Description
This monument is to the Irish Brigade in Gettysburg. The 63rd, 69th and 88th New York Regiments. That fought in the Wheatfield. The life sized wolfhound on the monuments is suppose to represent a dog mourning his lost masters. There is an inscription on the side that reads "This, in the matter of size and structure, truthfully represents the Irish Wolfhound, a dog which has been extict for more than a hundred years." The Irish Brigade comprised of the 63rd, 69th and 88th NY regiments and the 116th PA and the 28th MA Regiments. The Brigade was the 2nd Brigade of the 1st division of Hancocks famous 2nd Corp. The did most of thier fight on the 2nd day in support of Sickles infamous advance into the peach orchid.
Sickles (3rd Corp) extended his lines he exposed the Union left flank and Meade (commanding general) saw this he ordered Hancock(2nd Corp) to support. The Irish brigade was sent across the field between the little round top and the peach orchid, now known as the wheat field where some of the bloodiest fighting took place.
The Irish Brigade was known through out the war as one of the bravest and hardest fighting brigades in the army.
